LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Agios Nikolaos local attractions:

Agios Nikolaos built around the tranquil and picturesque Lake Voulismeni, Aghios Nikolaos is a lively shopping and dining destination by day that turns into a buzzing entertainment centre by night. With its cafés, tavernas and restaurants, it’s always popular with tourists — yet it still retains its reputation as a quaint fishing town. No trip to Aghios Nikolaos is complete without a visit to the carefully preserved Byzantine chapel of St Nicholas, built during the 7th century AD.

Spinalonga

A vast island fortress built in 1579 during Venetian occupation,Spinalonga has been the setting for various film and TV productions, and as the location for the best-selling novel The Island, by Victoria Hislop. Its history is intriguing: it was turned into a fortress by Venetians, has been used as a refuge by the Ottomans and was one of the last active leper colonies in Europe. Daios guests can arrange half day excursions to Spinalonga, departing from the resort to the island.

Knossos

The largest archaeological site on Crete is also one of the most elaborate and best preserved monuments in the whole of Greece. A Bronze Age Minoan palace, excavated in 1878 and again in the early part of the 20th century, Knossos is a feast for the eyes — but it’s also said to be the location of famous Greek myths. Here, it is suggested, is where Theseus killed the Minotaurus and from where Icarus took light before soaring too close to the sun.

Elounda

A small but pretty fishing village at the head of the Spinalonga peninsula, Elounda features a variety of bars, cafés, restaurants, plus small shops selling local handcrafted gifts.

ANCIENT SIGHTS

  • Kritsa, a unique community of Cretan people with their own traditions
  • Island Chrissi, an uninhabited location off southern Crete, known for its white beaches

  • Mochlos, an uninhabited island and ancient Minoan settlement off the north east coast
