Menelaos was first acquainted with the handpan in London in 2007 where a friend showed him a YouTube video of this new, fascinating percussion instrument. Having previously experimented with electronic beats, Menelaos felt the sound of the handpan was the missing piece to his personal voyage through music. His musical portfolio includes his album release 'Mi Via' as well as the soundtrack to the UK-documentary Emerging Proud (2017). Menelaos has performed on musical stages and festivals in Greece and made numerous collaborations with talented musicians, dancers, acrobats and story tellers.
The Story of the Handpan
In the year 2000 two artisan instrument makers from Bern, Switzerland presented the musical community with a new and revolutionary instrument which they called the ‘Hang’. The success of the instrument was instant and the demand skyrocketed. Almost 20 years on, there are at least 100 different artisan makers who produce their own version of the Hang. Every maker names their creation differently hence the need arose for a word that describes the family of these instrument. Hence the word ‘handpan’.
